The Northlands ERAAES (Environmental Remediation and Alternative Energy Systems) project consists of four coordinated subprojects: soil remediation, solar PV park, a lake loop geothermal district system and a biomass district heating system. The spoil remediation is a three-year program composed in-situ chemical oxidation at several sites in Lac Brochet to effectively destroy a range of petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil. The grid-tied solar PV park, when completed, will be Manitoba’s largest solar PV installation at 283kW with just over 1000 panels. The lake loop geothermal system provides the primary heating and cooling source to several community and residential buildings with the aim of removing the use of fossil fuels for heating from an area known as the lakeside cluster. The biomass district heating system is powered by two 750kW biomass boilers supplied by an automated wood chip feed system. The biomass district heating system supplies a secondary heat source to the school, community buildings and residential buildings. Starting up a local harvesting operation was also included in the ERAAES project, to source forest fired killed timber for the biomass district heating system.
