A Look at Our Past

NDL Construction
History

1946

Harold Barg is born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and raised on the family farm in Glenlea, Manitoba.

1965

Harold is offered his first construction job with Braemar Homes and ignites his lifelong passion for building and construction.

Harold connects with future junior partner, Kornelius Ens working on a roofing crew for Braemar Homes.

1967

Harold rises to the role of supervisor/foreman by 1967 for BF Klassen Construction.

Works on his first northern projects spending 7 months in Kugluktuk, Nunavut building a school, nursing station and power plant.

1972

Harold, along with 2 partners start Norland Construction Limited, running the business out of his home in Headingley, Manitoba.

1974

Partnership is concluded and Harold, along with his wife, begin Norcan Development Limited.

1975

Company grows to 5 employees. Norcan obtains its first major project – a parking garage development in Baker Lake.

Begin developing a strong reputation for its work in northern, rural and remote communities, including Baffin Island, Frobisher and Kugluktuk.

1980

Obtain a pre-engineered metal bidding franchise to expand offerings to arenas and recreation centres. Build the first Norcan office building at 3074 Portage Avenue.

Purchase the first company aeroplane, a 6-passenger Aztec to allow for greater access to remote communities. Kornelius Ens joins Norcan as a junior partner and who would go on to work alongside Harold for 25 years.

1982

Norcan moves from its Portage Avenue location to Niakwa Road on the east side of Winnipeg.

1985

Company grows to 12 employees increasing Norcan’s capacity and capabilities. Norcan pursues projects as a design builder for the first time.

1990

Norcan Development Limited is officially renamed to NDL Construction.

1991

Harold’s son Peter joins the company.

1995

Company grows to 50 employees. A growing team, expanding expertise and strength in the office opens doors to facilitate larger, more complex projects.

NDL office moves to its current location on Symington Lane in Navin, Manitoba.

2006

Harold’s son Jonathan joins the NDL team.

2011

NDL takes on its first fibre optic project in Northern Ontario.

2019

Peter and Jonathan take over ownership of NDL Construction.
